The World Is Blue: How Our Fate And The Ocean’s Are One by Sylvia A. Earle

If you have not heard of Sylvia Earle, she is legendary. She is an oceanographer, explorer-in-residence at National Geographic, and a female pioneer in marine biology. Sylvia Earle is warmly known as Her Deepness, for being underwater for more than a week and having countless scuba dives as well as in submersibles.

In her book, she advocates for the ocean, the importance of the animals that live in it. She describes the struggles that the ocean is facing. She also explains how we, humans, can help. She leaves us inspired and with the hope that there is a possibility for change.

Seasick: Ocean Change And The Extinction Of Life On Earth by Alanna Mitchell

Alanna Mitchell is a science journalist who has dived in the world’s ocean. This book is about what she has learned as well as how important the ocean is. She discusses the different problems the ocean is facing in her chapters, each being a different place in the world. Her artistry in writing really shows off and captures your attention.

She describes the beauty of the ocean and all its secrets. She in the end leaves us with a glimmer of hope where she ultimately is calling the reader and society to acknowledge it is a decision that is up to us.

Oceana: Our Endangered Oceans And What We Can Do To Save Them by Ted Danson

Ted Danson is largely known for his acting in shows like CSI and The Good Place. This book brings to light his other passion, the ocean. In the book, he describes his early memories with the ocean and how that has influenced his life. The book does a great job of telling you the facts of what the ocean is facing. It also does a great job explaining the policy challenges that are faced when protecting the ocean. The book is ultimately a description of how the company Oceana also began.

Becoming a Marine Biologist by Virginia Morell

Okay, I’m not going to lie, I definitely read this book because of the title. I was actually surprised by this book, it was not what I expected. I was expecting a book with a step-by-step guide on how to become a marine biologist, that would have been nice. It was actually a story about a marine biologist, Dr. Robin Baird, and his journey on becoming a marine biologist. Dr. Baird is actually a whale biologist and the book is about the story of how he ended up specifying as a whale biologist. In the book, you learn a lot about cetaceans, whales, and dolphins, alongside the people who learn and are doing research about them. If you pay attention to the book you realize how Dr. Baird became a well-known marine biologist.

I hope that you’ll try these books out! Let me know what are your favorite ocean books? Also, stay tuned for more book recommendations in the future!
