As we begin a new year I like to usually reflect and think about what I want for this new year. So today I am contemplating the question, Why do you do what you do? I want to challenge myself to really think about this and I hope you will ask yourself this question too.

Why should we ask ourselves this question? What’s the point? Well, I’d like to believe that we are all going on a path and if we don’t stop to consider where we are going we might not like where we are heading. So perhaps this is a great reminder to me and you that what we do, our decisions and our actions really do matter.

Now that you are considering the question it is important to look backward and forward. What were you doing, did it work, and did you enjoy it? That is taking the past into account. It is important to note that you don’t have to linger in the past too long. It is amazing to look at how far you have come and celebrate that. Sometimes we beat ourselves up for what we failed at or didn’t accomplish but don’t forget what you did! Maybe this is a good time to let you know you are awesome, you need to know that! Okay so now time to look at what we want or hope for. This is taking into account what needs to change as well as the steps that will need to be in place to accomplish that.

Behind all of this is your reason why. Sometimes we go through life just doing with no why. You can make a difference, for your family, at work, even for yourself but you won’t do it long without knowing why. Your why gives you drive it pushes you more when you are tired, frustrated, and feeling hopeless. This is your reason to get up and make a difference. Why would I start a blog or social platform about the ocean? My why is to make a difference in the world and in the lives of others. I want to shed light and be a voice for communities, ecosystems, and animals that need it. I find joy in teaching others of new things that even I may be learning about. Now it’s your turn.

Take time today or schedule it for a different day to write down your why. I also recommend writing down how you will do this. Give yourself goals on what you would like to see improvement or growth in. Place your why somewhere you can see it so you don’t forget. Place it on your wall, on your mirror, or on a sticky note on your computer. Make it visible. Then the only thing left to do is take the first step.

Well, friend, I hope this has encouraged you today! If it did please share it with a friend! Make sure to check our Instagram page as well!
