What You Need To Know About COP26

Hi Friend! Today I want to give you all the important deets on COP26. What is it, where is it going to be, how can you participate, and what this means for the future of climate change.

Okay, so I realize that some may have no clue what I’m talking about here. So let me take a step back and explain. COP26 is the UN (United Nations) climate change conference that happens annually. COP stands for the Conference Of the Parties, the parties here are the different countries involved. 26 means this is the 26th time they are meeting. This year COP26 will be in Glasgow, Scotland from October 31-November 12 and is in partnership with Italy. Make sure to check out the website for more details here. This conference is for the nations of the world to discuss climate change issues, what needs to be done to avoid further damage, and how to move forward toward a healthy planet.

So why is COP26 such a particularly big deal? Great question! COP26 will set the trajectory of the health of our planet for either recovery or destruction. I know sounds a bit dramatic. The next decade is vital for the health of our planet because as of right now we are in what’s considered a red zone for the climate. There is an exceedingly great amount of carbon in our atmosphere to the point where it could be irreversible. A recent IPCC(Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report stated that we are nearing a very dangerous line of crossing the 1.5℃ or 2.7℉ increase that if not corrected will lead to severe global warming. So this brings us back to COP26, this year’s conference will challenge the different nations to show proof of what each nation will do to lower their carbon dioxide emissions to be within a net-zero while, making sure it aids the nation in economic growth.
