Hi friend! Today I’m back with another blog all about Marine protected areas (MPAs). Today I am going to share what MPAs are, how they are important, and ways we can push for them so that there are more of them.

Marine Protect areas are areas of ocean, estuaries, or sea that are protected and restrict human activity to conserve and preserve the area. MPAs are similar to national parks that we have on land. The point is that these areas help protect the wildlife there which is important for population growth. MPAs are to help protect the natural environment so that it is preserved for future generations to enjoy but also to provide food and resources as the population is at an optimal size.

Why are MPAs important? MPAs help take areas that are usually desolate from destruction from man-made activities to areas that thrive with wildlife. A wonderful example is the Galapagos Island in Ecuador. You’ve probably heard of the Galapagos from your science class and instantly think Darwin, at least that is what comes to my mind. The waters in the Galapagos Island were getting polluted from runoff and the population of fish and other species was declining, but in 1998 an MPA was created. If you go visit this area now you will be surprised by the pristine environment. Recently the MPA surrounding the Galapagos was expanded as the countries surrounding (Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Panama) have unified to protect this very unique area. This is such a wonderful example of how uniting to help a local environment can make a difference.

So how do you and I get behind this idea of protecting environments that biologically are important for the survival of different species? I always say this but having an awareness of the issues is huge! The next thing you and I can do is share what we are learning with our family and friends. Supporting organizations and groups that make it their mission to expand MPAs is another great way to help. Organizations like Marine Conservation Institute that are working to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030, Only. One that is working on different campaigns to help the ocean. Signing petitions and sharing with others may not feel like a lot but with every person that supports us together, we can make waves of action.

Well friend I hope this blog was helpful to you and you learned something new! I hope you consider sharing this with others to spread the word! Don’t forget you can follow us at The Ocean’s Narrative on Instagram.
